WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Playing their third doubleheader in four days, the Southwest Minnesota State softball team (10-6) faced the Northwood (Mich.) Wolves and the Seton Hill Griffins Thursday afternoon. The matchup against Seton Hill is the third and final meeting between SHU and SMSU during THE Spring Games.
GAME ONE (Northwood)
SMSU dropped their second game in the team's trip to Florida, losing 6-0. This is the first shutout loss the Mustangs have suffered this season.
Ramsey Hopp (2-5) pitched the first six innings of the game for the Mustangs, surrendering six runs (all earned) on 11 hits and two walks, striking out one batter.
Jordan Bussey came in for the seventh inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout.
The Mustangs had six hits in the contest, all singles, by six different batters (
Riley Kramolisch,
Grace Anderson,
Paris Van Dyke,
Jordyn Marsh,
Carley Stych and Hopp).
The Wolves put the first runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning by virtue of a three-run home run by Ashley Ziel.
Northwood extended the lead in the sixth inning, scoring three more runs in the top half of the sixth, two of those with two outs.
Kamden Binney (1-0) pitched the first six innings for Northwood, allowing no runs on five hits and a walk, fanning three SMSU batters. The Wolves were led by Jenna Kowalski and Ashley Ziel, both with three hits in the contest, with Ziel earning four RBIs.
GAME TWO (Seton Hill)
In a game that was called early due to weather in the area, SMSU earned their third victory against SHU in THE Spring Games, winning 5-1.
Jordyn Marsh (8-0) pitched all six defensive innings for the Mustangs, allowing one earned run one six hits, striking out one Seton Hill batter.
Seven Mustangs had a hit in the contest, with
Emma Humpal and
Lexi Ingalls leading the way with two hits each, while Kaylee Hafferman had two RBIs in the game.
The Mustangs got things going early, scoring two runs in the top of the second, with RBI doubles from Ingalls and Hafferman.
Humpal scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning, making the score 3-1 in favor of SMSU.
Marsh extended the lead to 4-1 in the top of the sixth with an RBI double into left center field.
SMSU would tack on another run in the sixth inning, before the game was called off due to lightning and storms in the area.
SMSU faces Northwood again Friday morning as well as Glenville State that afternoon. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11 a.m. CST / 12 p.m. EST. Both games are available to watch on FloCollege (requires subscription), and live stats will be available for both games.
