SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State softball team (23-17, 9-5 NSIC) traveled to Sioux Falls Wednesday, splitting a conference doubleheader with the USF Cougars (21-18, 9-5 NSIC). The Mustangs dropped game one 22-1 before winning game two 2-1.
GAME ONE
Ramsey Hopp (8-11) pitched 3 1/3 for the Mustangs in game one, while
Jordan Bussey came in relief during the second inning.
Paris Van Dyke,
Aliza Acker, and
Grace Anderson supplied the three hits for SMSU in the first game, as Marsh had the lone RBI.
The Cougars started the game strong putting up two runs in the second inning from a sacrifice bunt and an RBI double from Hanna Raethz.
USF continued the strong start into the second inning, scoring 20 runs total in the inning on 10 hits.
Marsh brought in the lone run for the Mustangs in the fourth inning with a ground out to the second baseman, which prompted Van Dyke to score.
USF's Maddi Duncan (13-6) pitched five innings allowing one run on three hits, striking out just two Mustang batters. Three different USF batters had two hits in the game, while Charlie Pryor led the way with four RBIs.
GAME TWO
Jordyn Marsh (15-5) pitched all seven innings for SMSU allowing one earned run and striking out one Cougar batter.
The Mustangs were led offensively by
Riley Kramolisch,
Aliza Acker, and
Ramsey Hopp with two hits each.
Emma Humpal and
Jordyn Marsh provided the RBIs for the Mustangs in game two.
USF jumped to an early lead in the second inning with an RBI single from Morgan Linstad.
Humpal leveled the contest in the top of the fourth inning with a double to left field, allowing Acker to score.
Marsh drew the winning run in the seventh inning with a bases-loaded walk after the Cougars brought in Maddi Duncan in relief.
Lauryn Foudree started the second game for USF going 5 1/3 innings allowing one run on seven hits. Ava Mejia (2-2) was credited with the loss pitching one inning allowing one run on two hits. Megan Jochimsen led the way offensively for the Cougars with three hits.
SMSU is scheduled to face Concordia-St. Paul in a doubleheader in the state capital on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
