MOORHEAD, Minn. – Jada Backes scored a pair of second half goals, while
Madelyn Cory made five saves, to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 2-0 victory over MSU Moorhead in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer on Sunday afternoon.
Sophia Wilson had a pair of assists to help SMSU earn its first victory of the season to improve to 1-4-2 overall, 1-2-1 NSIC.
MSU Moorhead drops to 2-3-2 overall, 1-2-1 NSIC.
Backes was able to break the scoreless game in the 70
th minute sprinting free from the MSUM defense off a great pass from Wilson to put SMSU in the lead. Less than two minutes later, the duo connected again with Wilson feeding another perfect pass to Backes, who buried the goal for her first career multi-goal game.
Cory was strong in goal stopping all five shots in earning her second straight shutout.
SMSU continues road play next Friday, Sept. 25, with a 5 p.m. match-up at St. Cloud State.
