R/A Facility

The Recreation/Athletic Facility has served as the home of Southwest Minnesota State University basketball since the 1996-97 season. The 4,000-seat arena, which opened in the summer of 1996, is twice the capacity of the Physical Education Gym, which was the home of SMSU basketball from 1968-96.

The $6.8 million facility gives SMSU one of the best home basketball facilities not only in the conference but in the region as well.  Regarded as one of the best basketball atmospheres in the Northern Sun Conference, the R/A Facility ranks among the top two yearly in attendance in the NSIC and from 1999 to 2003, SMSU rank second in average attendance in the state of Minnesota, only behind the University of Minnesota.

The arena attendance record for SMSU basketball was set on Feb. 17, 1999, when 3,512 fans witnessed the SMSU-Northern State game.

The R/A Facility is one of the largest arenas in the region and is an ideal site for concerts, commencements and many other activities in addition to basketball, volleyball and wrestling.

The facility is 32,890 square feet and has two Taraflex Sports Floor courts, a jogging track and two wood floor basketball courts.

The SMSU fitness center/weight room, which is located just outside the R/A Facility, was also completed in 1996 and has since greatly enhanced the opportunities for for Mustang athletes that use the facility.

The 4,059 square foot facility added more space which greatly enhanced the amount of work stations available, allowing for more intense lifting periods.

The facility is equipped with four squat stations, four bench stations, four incline benches, two power clean platforms, two hip sleds, two hi-lo lateral pull machines, and a brand new hammer strength jammer.  A complete assortment of free weights is also available for athletes along with a running track located in the R/A Facility.

Both the men's and women's teams have enjoyed tremendous success in the R/A Facility.  Since it opened in 1996, the men have a home record of 108-43 and the women have a home record of 90-50.  Highlighted in those records are a perfect 12-0 home season by the women in 2000-01 an a 13-2 home season for the men in 2006-07.
