Anthony Kerr

Anthony Kerr is in his fourth season as the team’s linebackers coach and special teams coordinator in 2014.

During his tenure, Kerr has made a major impact on both the Mustang defense and special teams. During his first season in 2011, Mustang punter Mike Wenk set a school single-season record for punt average, while the team blocked three punts. Linebackers John Kersbergen and Phil Breidall were named the team’s MVP and defensive player of the year respectively, with both also earning All-NSIC honors.

In 2012, SMSU kicker Lance Schuveiller booted seven field goals and made 38 of 40 PATs, while linebacker Dashawn Miller racked up 59 tackles in his first season and was named the team’s defensive player of the year. 
 
In 2013, Wenk was named second team All-NSIC, leading the conference in punt average at 42.8 yards. The SMSU defense scored four touchdowns last season with the Mustang linebackers returning three interceptions for touchdowns.

Prior to SMSU, Kerr spent three seasons as the special teams coordinator, linebackers coach and strength and conditioning coordinator at NCAA Division III Millikin University in Decatur, Ill.

Before joining the staff at Millikin, Kerr coached linebackers, secondary and special teams for two seasons at Dana College (Neb.). During his first season, he helped Dana record its first winning season in 10 years, while in his second season, Dana led the conference in takeaways.

He began his coaching career at Colorado Mesa University spending six seasons as an assistant coach. He coached outside linebackers for three seasons, before taking over as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator in 2003. During his tenure, CMU won a pair of conference championships and won an NCAA playoff game for the first time in school history. In 2005, CMU finished third in NCAA II with 23 interceptions and finished the season with 33 total turnovers, while in 2003, CMU led the conference in scoring defense, rushing defense and turnovers gained.

Kerr played four seasons at strong safety for the CMU football program and served as team captain in 1997. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mass communications from CMU and his master’s degree in sports management from Nova Southeastern (Fla.).

Anthony and his wife, Ami, live in Marshall with their son, Avery and daughters, Adalinn and Austinn.
