Boyer Bouman is in his second season as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at SMSU in 2023.
Despite SMSU starting three different freshmen quarterbacks throughout the year, the Mustangs averaged 324 yards of total offense and had All-NSIC South first team honorees at running back and offensive line.
Bouman is no stranger to SMSU as he spent five seasons (2015-19) as a quarterback for the Mustangs and also spent one season (2020) as wide receivers coach. He returns to SMSU after spending the 2021 season as an offensive assistant coach at the University of South Dakota.
Â
During the 2021 season, Bouman was part of one of the best seasons in USD history as the Coyotes qualified for the NCAA playoffs and hosted its first-ever playoff games. USD defeated three nationally-ranked teams and tied for third in the league standings with a 5-3 record. Bouman worked primarily with the quarterbacks and wide receivers during his one season.
Â
Bouman played five seasons for the Mustangs and was a three-time Academic All-NSIC honoree. He was named second team All-NSIC South in 2019, leading the NSIC in passing yards per game and total offense. Named SMSU's Offensive Player of the Year and "True Mustang" award winner following his senior season, Bouman completed 200 of 332 pass attempts for 2,339 yards with 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions during the 2019 season.
Â
Bouman earned his bachelor's degree in education and sports management from SMSU and also earned his master's degree from SMSU in physical education and coaching of sport. Â
