SMSU Athletics

Chase Gruening is in his first season as an assistant coach at SMSU in 2013 and will coach the team’s defensive line.

Gruening comes to SMSU after spending last season as running backs coach at Wisconsin-Stout. 

A native of Sherman, Ill., Gruening played four seasons at Millikin University (Ill.), was a team captain and was a two-time all-conference defensive lineman.

He began his coaching career in 2011, serving as linebackers and defensive backs coach at Millikin and also served as the team’s strength and conditioning coach.

Gruening is a 2011 graduate of Millikan with a degree in fitness and sport.  He is pursuing his master’s degree in education at SMSU.
