Paul Weiland is in his first season as head coach of the SMSU wheelchair basketball program after spending two years as co-head coach.
Weiland spent five years as a member of the Rollin’ Mustangs (2000-2005). During his career he was a five-year letterwinner, three-year captain, and the 2005 recipient of the Frank M. Barissle Sportsman of the Year award for the Central Intercollegiate Division of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. As a player, Weiland also received the teams Most Desire Award four consecutive years (2001-2005). Weiland was also a member of the 2000-01 SMSU wheelchair basketball team, which National Wheelchair Basketball Association Division II championship game.
Weiland also had a two-year stint a student assistant coach under former head coach Dale Erickson
A native of Beresford, S.D., Weiland graduated from SMSU in 2007 with a degree in health and physical education and minors in adaptive physical education, coaching and psychology. Currently, he is pursuing a master’s degree in education with an emphasis in sports leadership.
