Amy Olson enters her third season as the leader of the SMSU women's soccer program in 2010. Olson was named to the post on Dec. 28, 2007, becoming the third head coach in the program's 13-year history.
Olson compiled a 3-14-0 record in her inaugural season with the Mustangs, rattling off two wins to close the the 2008 campaign at SMSU's freshly built Regional Event Center. She had her first All-NSIC performer in freshman Kelly Fitzgerald and landed six of her players on the Academic All-NSIC squad.
Olson led the Mustangs to a 2-14-0 record in her second season at the helm of the soccer squad. She added her second All-NSIC player in Jenna Perske. In addition, she had seven players named to the Academic All-NSIC team in 2009.
Prior to arriving at SMSU, Olson spent four seasons as head coach at NCAA Division I South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, S.C., in 2007. Before taking over the at South Carolina State, Olson spent two seasons as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Prairie View A&M University, where she helped start its women’s soccer program. During her two years at Prairie View A&M, Olson also coached a pair of club teams in Minnesota, the West Side Soccer Association in St. Paul and the Minneapolis Soccer Association in Minneapolis.
Olson’s teams had tremendous success in the classroom as South Carolina State’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) was a perfect 1.000. On the field, SCSU had five players earn postseason honors from the United Soccer Conference in 2007.
A native of Minneapolis, Olson is a 2001 graduate of Howard University with a degree in international business. She was a four-year member of the Howard women’s soccer team, earning Big South All-Conference honors twice while being named team co-most valuable player three times. A 1998 academic All-Big South honoree, Olson also served as team captain in 1999. She earned her master’s degree in physical education from Prairie View A&M in 2003.
