John Sterner serves as an assistant coach with the SMSU wrestling program in 2024-25.

Sterner has a long and decorated association with the Mustang wrestling program, having served as the program's head coach for nine seasons from 1998-2007, including winning an NSIC title in 2001.

Sterner was a standout wrestler for SMSU, advancing to the NAIA Championships three times, including winning the national title at 190 in 1989.
