The fourth-seeded Southwest Minnesota State University mens basketball team (15-13) will take on top-seeded Winona State University (24-4) in the semifinals of the NSIC Red Baron Classic this Saturday, March 4 at McCown Gym in Winona, Minn., beginning at 4 p.m.
Winona State, which is ranked sixth in the latest national top 25 poll and second in the North Central Regional rankings, has defeated Southwest Minnesota State twice this season.
This will be the third time the two teams have played each other in the NSIC tournament. Winona State won 94-78 in the 2001 tournament championship game and also won 71-65 in the quarterfinals of the 2004 tournament in Winona.
The winner of Saturdays semifinal will play in the championship game on
Sunday, Mar. 5 at 2 p.m. against the winner of the Bemidji State/Northern State game. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
Fletcher Earns Second Team All-Conference Honors
Southwest Minnesota State sophomore guard Matt Fletcher was named second team All-NSIC on Thursday as voted by the conference head coaches. In conference play, Fletcher finished second in field goal percentage (56.5), second in three-point field goal percentage (50.0), second in three-point fields made (40) and ninth in scoring (14.0). Overall he is averaging 13.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg and shooting 50.2 percent from the field.
Southwest Minnesota State in the NSIC Postseason Tournament
Southwest Minnesota State is 6-5 all-time in the NSIC tournament since it started in 2000. After a semifinal appearance in 2000, SMSU advanced to two straight tournament finals in 2001 and 2002, but lost three straight quarterfinals games before winning on Wednesday night over Wayne State.

According to the latest NCAA stats released on Feb. 28, SMSU sophomore guard Matt Fletcher continues to rank high in the country in three-point field goal percentage as he begins the week ranked fifth at 47.5 percent ... Fletcher also ranks 41st in three-point field goals made per game (2.8), while sophomore Travis Krenske ranks 33rd in free throw percentage (85.4).
As a team, SMSU ranks eighth in free throw percentage (76.9), 39th in three-point field goal percentage (38.2), 42nd in three-point field goals made per game (8.1), and 63rd in scoring defense (67.1).

Winona State, winners of 14 straight games, are 24-4 overall and ranked 6th in the country ... WSU is led by conference player of the year David Zellmann who is averaging 18.1 ppg and 5.0 rpg while shooting 48.8 percent ... The Coaches
Southwest Minnesota State head coach Greg Stemen is in his fifth season with an overall record of 76-67.
Named head coach on Apr. 10, 2001, Stemen led SMSU to 21 wins in his first season and a second place finish in the NSIC during his second season. Prior to being named head coach, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at SMSU, helping lead the Mustangs to a two-year record of 46-17, which included a conference and NCAA regional championship and a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2001.
Mike Leaf is in his eighth season at Winona State with a record of 145-87.

This Season Versus Winona State
WSU is 2-0 against SMSU this season, winning 77-67 in Marshall on Jan. 14 and 77-69 in Winona, Minn., on Feb. 17.
In the first match-up, 23rd ranked Winona State stormed to a 45-22 halftime lead and went on to defeat Southwest Minnesota State 77-67.
SMSU fought back into the contest, cutting the WSU lead to 55-49 with just over 12 minutes left in the game, but WSU answered back with a 12-4 run in the next five minutes to put the game away.
David Zellmann led WSU with a game-high 24 points, while Zach Malvik added 23 points. John Smith poured in 15 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked four shots.
Matt Fletcher paced SMSU with 19 points on 7 of 10 shooting including 5 of 7 from three-point range.
In the second game, WSU broke up a tight 29-27 game at halftime with a 14-2 run in the first two and a half minutes of the second half and went on to earn the eight-point victory. Winona State shot just 39.7 percent but was 22 of 34 from the free throw line, while SMSU was 10 of 13. Zach Malvik led WSU with 22 points including hitting on four three-pointers.
Jeremy VanKlompenburg and Matt Fletcher each led the Mustangs with 17 points.
Hanging Onto the Ball
Southwest Minnesota State has done a solid job of limiting turnovers all season long. Through 28 games, SMSU has had 11 or less turnovers in 15 games and has had 14 or less turnovers in 20 of 28 contests.
Rebounding Edge for SMSU
Rebounding the ball has been a big factor for SMSU this season. Southwest is 13-2 when outrebounding their opponents or having the same total, while going 2-11 when being outrebounded by their opponents.
Their two victories over Minnesota-Crookston are the only time SMSU has won when being outrebounded.
Defense is the Key for an SMSU W
Southwest Minnesota State has recorded 15 wins this season and most of that has to do with solid defense.
In the 14 SMSU victories, opponents are averaging just 61.7 points per game and shooting 41.8 percent from the field.
SMSU is outrebounding their opponents by a margin of +4.0 in the wins, while scoring an average of 74.5
In seven of the 15 victories this season, SMSU has held their opponents to 59 or less points and in 13 of their wins they have held the opponent to 69 or less points.
Fletcher Hits 100, Ranks as Schools Best
Sophomore Matt Fletcher has now connected on 127 career three-point field goals and now ranks sixth in school history. Adam Tesch (1998-02) holds the school record with 268 3-pointers.
Fletcher is also the programs all-time leader in three-point field goal percentage shooting 46.2 percent (122 of 264).

Two Mustangs Honored by NSIC
Two SMSU juniors have been honored as player of the week by the NSIC this season. Junior Chad Orum was named NSIC Player of the Week on Jan. 3, while junior Jeremy VanKlompenburg earned the award on Jan. 30.
Krenske Ties Two Single-Game Records
SMSU sophomore guard Travis Krenske tied two SMSU single-game free throw records on Jan. 13 in the win over Concordia.
Krenskes 13 for 13 performance from the free throw line tied the record for best free throw percentage with Marques Pena, who also finished 13 for 13 on Jan. 13, 2001. Krenske also tied the school record for most free throws made in one game.
Four other SMSU players have also made 13 free throws in one game, with last being Pena in 2001.
The Magic Number
As most would guess, when a team scores 80 or more points in a single game, their odds of winning are very high and SMSU has made that fact hold true in recent years.
After scoring 80 or more points five times this season, Southwest is now 86-8 when scoring 80 or more points in a game since the 1997-98 season.
Hogan Out for the Season
Southwest Minnesota State junior guard Nic Hogan will miss the season after suffering an injury in the offseason. Hogan led SMSU with 91 three-pointers last season and averaged 12.3 points per game, finishing third on the team.
Southwest Looks for Home Magic
The R/A Facility, the home of SMSU basketball since the 1996-97 season, has been a tough place to play for opponents since opening its doors.
After ten seasons as the Mustang home arena, SMSU has compiled a record of 95-41 (69.8) all-time at the R/A Facility.

SMSU Among NSICs Best
Southwest Minnesota State ranks among the best in the NSIC in overall victories among conference schools in the last nine seasons.
Since the start of the 1997-98 season, SMSU has recorded 153 overall victories, third most in the league. Northern State leads the list with 182 victories.

Team Captains
Three Mustang players were serve as team captains for the 2005-06 season. Senior guard Andy Wiersma along with junior center Jeremy VanKlompenburg and junior forward Chad Orum earned the honor this season. The captains were chosen by a vote of the SMSU players.
Two to Redshirt
SMSU has redshirted two freshmen players this season. Guard Andrew Peschong and center Nick Dale both will sit out this season and will have four years of eligibility remaining.
Southwest Signs One Early
SMSU head coach Greg Stemen announced on Nov. 10, that Pelican Rapids H.S. standout Taylor Huseby has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at SMSU in 2006-07. Huseby is a two-time all-conference pick and honorable mention all-state selection.
