Mike Jewett

Mike Jewett enters his fourth season as head women’s basketball coach at SMSU in 2009-10.  Under his direction, the Mustangs have charted improved records in each of his seasons, going from seven wins in 2006-07 to twice that in 2008-09. The sixth head coach in the program’s 41-year history, Jewett is in seventh overall season as a head coach at the collegiate level, where he has an overall record of 95-73 (33-53 at SMSU).

In his first year at the helm of SMSU’s women’s basketball program, Jewett led the team to a 7-21 overall record and a ninth place conference finish with a 4-14 NSIC record.  Jewett guided his team to victories over the eighth-ranked team in the region, Minnesota State Moorhead, and helped his team stun nationally ranked No. 18 Northern State.

The Mustangs saw steady improvement in Jewett’s second season at SMSU as they went 12-16 overall and finished with a 7-11 NSIC record.  SMSU had its longest winning streak since 2005, running off four consecutive wins, including road victories at Mary and Northern State in late January and early February.

The campaign for Jewett and the Mustangs in 2008-09 was a more challenging one with a newly expanded NSIC, but SMSU compiled a solid 14-16 overall record and was 6-14 in the NSIC. Jewett's squad knocked off a pair of nationally ranked clubs when his Mustangs defeated No. 12 Delta State (Miss.) to open the season and took another from No. 11 Minnesota State Moorhead just after the new year. But it wasn't just the hardwood where Jewett's crew was working hard; his team finished ranked 18th in NCAA Division II in team grade point average with a 3.46.

Jewett came to SMSU  following a two-year stay as an assistant coach at St. Cloud State.  During his two years at SCSU, the Huskies recorded 52 victories, which included two NCAA regional championships and a Final Four appearance in 2006.

Prior to joining the SCSU staff, Jewett was the head women's basketball coach (2001-04) at Franklin College in Franklin, Ind., for three seasons.  At Franklin, he compiled a 62-20 record.  During his final season in 2003-04, led his team to a conference championship and the second round of the NCAA tournament and was named conference coach of the year.

Jewett also had a four-year stint as an assistant coach at Augustana (S.D.).  While with Augie, he helped lead the Vikings to 76 victories and an appearance in the 2001 NCAA tournament.

Jewett’s coaching career began in 1994 as the head girls’ basketball coach at Brandon Valley High School in Brandon, S.D., where he spent three seasons (1994-97) before making the move to Augustana.

Jewett received his bachelor’s degree in English education from Augustana (S.D.) in 1994, where he also was a member of the Viking men’s basketball program for two years. He earned his master’s degree from the University of South Dakota in physical education in 1999.

A native of Flandreau, S.D., Jewett and his wife Michelle live in Marshall and have three children, Michaela (8), Kaden (6) and Kate (2).
