Women's Basketball Wins Season Opener Versus Chadron State

CHADRON, NEB.:
  Southwest Minnesota State junior Sara Leidall scored a team-high 20 points to lead the Mustangs to a 72-54 victory over Chadron State College in the season opener on Saturady night in Chadron, Neb.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead as they were up 5-0 in the first two minutes of the game.  Chadron then went on a 11-0 run to gain the lead at the 15 minute mark of the first half.  SMSU battled back and went into halftime with a 32-26 lead after Leidall hit two free throws.  

In the second half, Chadron State cut the led to four points at the 14 minute mark making the score 36-32.  The Mustangs then went on an 11-1 run to put the score at 44-33 with 12:49 remaining in the game. 
Southwest was able to kept the lead for the rest of the game to earn the victory.

SMSU shot 43.5 percent from the field in the game, as they were 16-of-31 in the second half, for a 51.6 shooting percentage.  The Mustangs shot 27.3 from behind the 3-point arch and were 80 percent from the free-throw line as they were a perfect 7-of7 in the first half.

Leidall, who led the Mustangs with 20 points, was 7 for 11 from the field and made 6-of-6 at the free-throw line while also earning six rebounds.

SMSU's junior Heidi Kimmes had a career high 14 points while earning 10 points in the second half.  She was 7 for 9 from the field and grabbed four rebounds.

 Junior Abby Oakland chipped in 11 points and had a career-high and team-high eight rebounds for the Mustangs.  Oakland hit three, three-pointers and dished out a team-high five assists.

Kady Telschow and Tori Fink each added six points, while Fink earned a team-high four steals.

The Mustangs were out-rebounded 36-33 but forced Chadron State to have 22 turnovers compared to SMSU 16.

Southwest will be back in action on Monday, Nov. 19 when they face Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D. at 7 p.m. CST.
