SMSU's Heidi Kimmes defends NSU's Noelle Hall

SMSU Suffers Hearbreaking Loss to Northern State

MARSHALL, MINN.:  The Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs went a 10-1 run late in the second half cutting the NSU lead to50-49, with 6:30 remaining in the game.  SMSU however was unable to pull off the victory as they fell 63-60 to Northern State University on Friday evening in Marshall, Minn.

SMSU falls to 1-2 in the NSIC and 4-3 overall while Northern State improves to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Southwest, who went into halftime with a 32-58 lead finished the game shooting 39.3 percent from the field, while NSU finished with a 41.8 shooting percentage.  The Mustangs were 8-for-16 from 3-point range, 50 percent, as the Wolves finished with a 43.8 three-point shooting percentage.

The Mustangs were led by Heidi Kimmes who had a career high 19 points while grabbing five rebounds.  Kimmes was 8-for-12 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe.  Liz Grider had 17 points for the Mustangs while also grabbing five boards.  Grider was 5-for-12 from the field while hitting a career high four three-pointers.

Senior Marshall native Laura VanOverbeke hit some key three-pointers late in the game as she added nine points as she was 3-for-4 from behind the arch. 

Megan Stadler lead the team with five assists while Grider had a team-high three steals.

NSU was led by Noelle Hall who had 14 points.

SMSU will be back in action tomorrow night against University of Mary at 6 p.m. in the R/A Facility.
