Box Score
JAMESTOWN, N.D.: Jamestown College, the No. 16 ranked team in NAIA, took advantage of two costly Southwest Minnesota State turnovers in the second half and went on to earn a 17-9 non-conference victory in Jamestown, N.D.
In some of the worst field conditions to play in, neither team was able to move the ball as a steady rain hit the region all day long causing the field to turn into mud bowl.
Jamestown took a 7-2 halftime lead scoring the only touchdown of the first half on a 43-yard touchdown pass from Tanner Kelting to Jake Stoltz late in the first quarter. SMSU scored on a safety midway through the second quarter on a bad snap that sailed over the JC punter.
Mustang sophomore Blake Wilson found the endzone on a 78-yard punt return in the second quarter, but it was called back on a block in the back.
In the third quarter, the SMSU defense forced a Jamestown punt on its first possesion, but on the ensuing punt, SMSU's Zach Wysong fumbled the ball and JC recovered deep in SMSU's end. Kelting then connected on a 23-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 14-2.
The Mustangs answered back on their next drive as Josh Shudlick tossed a 6-yard touchdown pass to Wysong and the extra point cut the Jimmie lead to 14-9.
The game would remain a five-point JC lead until midway through the fourth quarter when Mustang quarterback Tony Rislov, who was in the game due to an injury to Shudlick, fumbled the ball and the Jimmie defense recovered inside the SMSU 10-yard line. The SMSU defense held, forcing a field goal but Jamestown's Bryan Loweree drilled a 22-yard field goal to put JC up by a score of 17-9.
SMSU would move the ball inside the JC 20-yard late in the fourth quarter but was stopped on downs with just under three minutes left in the game. The Mustang defense would force another JC punt just three plays later, but Shudlick was intercepted on SMSU's last possesion to seal the win for Jamestown.
Wysong led the SMSU offense with 85 yards on 21 carries, while Shudlick completed 11 of 29 passes for 116 yards and one touchdown. Derek Townsend led all SMSU receivers with four receptions for 46 yards.
Tyler Reed paced the SMSU defense with eight tackles and two pass break-ups.
The Mustangs were 1-for-3 in the red zone on Saturday.
