MARSHALL, MINN.: Southwest Minnesota State held Concordia-St. Paul to just 35.6 percent shooting, including 25.9 percent in the first half, and cruised to a 74-50 victory on Saturday night in Marshall.
SMSU's Ross DeMasi led the Mustang offense with his third double-double of the season as he poured in 16 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. DeMasi finished the night connecting on 7 of 9 shots from the field.
SMSU used a big run in the first half to take the lead for good behind solid defense. The Mustangs trailed 13-12 with 9:44 left in the first half before SMSU held the Golden Bears scoreless for the next six minutes to take 26-13 lead with 4:16 remaining in the half. SMSU finished with a 10-point 28-18 halftime limiting CSP to just seven field goals on 27 attempts. SMSU struggled as well shooting just 37.5 percent from the field including 1 of 5 from three-point range.
The second half was all Mustangs as they jumped to a 39-22 lead just four minutes into the half. SMSU pushed the lead to as many as 30 points in the half before settling for the 24-point victory.
Travis Krenske and Kevin Andrews also scored in double figures with 13 points each with Andrews finishing 6 of 8 shooting from the field with seven rebounds and three assists.
James Metcalf led CSP with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
SMSU improves to 10-7 overall, 5-4 NSIC, while CSP drops to 10-8 overall, 4-5 NSIC. SMSU is now 15-3 all-time versus CSP.
The Mustangs return to action in just a few days with a non-conference game at Minnesota State, Mankato. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Taylor Center. SMSU will return to NSIC action next weekend hosting Minnesota, Crookston and Bemidji State.
