SMSU Shoots Season Low in Loss to Minnesota, Crookston

MARSHALL, MINN.: The Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs put together a late run as Laura VanOverbeke pulled down a big offensive rebound and got the put-back basket to bring the Mustangs within two points with 30 seconds remaining, but Minnesota, Crookston was able to hang on for the 75-71 victory on Friday evening in Marshall.

The Mustangs, who have not won a home conference game this season, fall to 7-11 overall and 3-7 in the NSIC while the Eagles improve to 6-13 overall and 2-8 in conference play.

SMSU shot a season low 32.4 percent from the field as they were 22-of-68. UMC finished the game shooting 41.8 percent from the field and were 53.3 percent from three-point range compared to the Mustangs 23.1 three-point shooting percentage.

Southwest held a halftime lead of 37-34 but Crookston was able to tied the score at 40-40 within the first two minutes of the second half. UMC lead by as much as nine points in the second half as they held a 59-50 lead with 10:32 remaining and also held a eight point lead again with 7:59 left to play.

SMSU and Crookston each had four players record double-figures on the night. Leading the way for SMSU was Heidi Kimmes who tallied 17 points and five rebounds. Kimmes was 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. Tori Fink and Liz Grider each added 13 points as well. Grider pulled down six rebounds, while Fink contributed three assists.

Abby Oakland rounded out the scoring with 10 points, all coming in the first half of play. SMSU who outrebounded the Golden Eagles 46-40 were led by Sara Leidall and Laura VanOverbeke who each pulled down seven boards.

UMC was led by Katie Cheline and Jamie Zelinsky who each contributed 16 points.

The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow night hosting Bemidji State for Hawaiian night.
