Rolling Mustangs Drop Two to Wisconsin-Whitewater

Marshall, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball team dropped two games on Saturday to Wisconsin-Whitewater, losing 56-41 and 73-46.  It was the season opener for both teams.

In the first game, the Mustangs ran into foul trouble as leading scorer Evan Thorn fouled out less than seven minutes into the second half.  That, combined with 32.8 percent shooting for the game, led to Whitewater fast-breaking their way to a lopsided victory.  The Mustangs were lead by Nathan Carruth who had 19 points and 13 rebounds, Kyle Timmerman chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds, while Thomas Abrahamson added six points.

In the second game, the Mustangs played well for the first ten minutes of the game until Whitewater's speed and size overran the smaller Mustangs.  Poor shooting again hindered the Mustangs as they were only able to muster a meager 31.9 percent from the floor.  The Mustangs were led by senior Evan Thorn with 22 points, and Nathan Carruth added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Kyle Timmerman added 10 points as well.

“We knew this was going to be a tough matchup, and we may have underestimated their overall team speed, but we learned about our team this weekend that will allow us to prepare for the stiff competition we will face next weekend,” co-head coach Paul Weiland said.

The Mustangs next action will be on Nov. 14-15 as they play five games in Stillwater, Okla.
