Mustangs Shoot Past Chadron State in Home Opener

MARSHALL, MINN. - Southwest Minnesota State opened its home schedule on Saturday afternoon connecting on school record-tying 14 three-pointers and went on to earn a 111-75 victory over Chadron State (Neb.) at the R/A Facility in Marshall.

SMSU is now 3-1 on the season while CSC drops to 0-1.  The 14 three-pointers also ties an R/A Facility record for three-pointers in a game.

SMSU sophomore transfer Heather Smith was red-hot on Saturday pouring in a career-high 29 points on 9 of 12 shooting including a blistering 5 of 7 from three-point range.  SMSU finished game making 14 of 29 three-point attempts while forcing Chadron State into 27 turnovers which lead to 35 Mustang points.   

Chadron State took an early 4-2 lead but it was all Southwest Minnesota State after that as the Mustangs went on a 14-2 run to built a 16-6 lead with 16:11 remaining.  SMSU led 27-19 with 11:22 remaining in the opening half before putting the game away in the next four minutes going on another 14-2 run to extend the margin to 41-21 with 7:32 left in the first half.

SMSU took a 60-36 halftime lead behind Smith's 20 first half points.  The Mustangs made eight first half three-pointers and forced the Eagles into 15 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.

The Mustang lead would never dip below 24 for the remainder of the game as SMSU improves to 3-1 overall for the second straight season.

Senior Abby Oakland was one of only two other Mustangs in double figures pouring in 12 points on four three-pointers while also grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds for hes first career double-double.  Senior Sara Leidall added 13 points on 5 of 10 shooting and now has 990 career points and is 10 points shy of becoming the 16th player in school history to reach 1,000 points.

All 14 Mustangs who played in the game scored while 10 players delivered assits with junior Megan Stadler dishing out a game-high seven assists with three steals and just one turnover.

SMSU will continue non-conference play on Tuesday, Nov. 18 hosting Mayville State (N.D.) at 7 p.m.
