Oakland's Career-High Lifts SMSU to Victory

Southwest Minnesota State senior Abby Oakland poured in a career-high 22 points while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out five assists to lead the Mustangs to a 93-75 over Mount Mercy (Iowa) on Saturday in Marshall.  SMSU improves to 5-1 overall with the win, while Mount Mercy drops to 3-3.

Mount Mercy jumped out to a fast start scoring the game's first eight points in the opening three minutes before SMSU's Taylor Voss hit a three-pointer with 16:41 left in the opening half.  SMSU trailed by as many as seven points in the opening half before mounting a rally and taking its first lead of the game at 31-30 on a jumper by senior Sara Leidall at the 3:19 mark.  

Mount Mercy regained the lead at 35-33 with just under two minutes left in the half before junior Andrea Fennern gave SMSU the lead back on a three-pointer with 1:51 remaining making the score 36-35.  Mount Mercy regained the lead with 38 seconds left at 40-39 before Voss added another basket to close out the half and give SMSU a 41-40 halftime lead.

SMSU would never trail again as they built an 11-point lead at 58-47 with 11:39 left in the game before MMC pulled to within 60-56 with 8:41 remaining in the game.  Southwest Minnesota State answered right back putting together a 16-6 run in the next three minutes to build the lead to 76-62 with five minutes left in the game and never looked back.

Voss finished the game with a career-high 11 points on 4 of 8 shooting including hitting on three three-pointers.  Leidall poured in 16 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to round out the SMSU double figure scorers.  

Catalina Quintana led Mount Mercy with 18 points.

SMSU will now be off for one week before returning to non-conference action on Saturday, Nov. 29 at the NSIC Holiday HoopsFest in Sioux Falls, S.D.  SMSU takes on Augustana starting at 5 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Arena.
