The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball team opens its season this Saturday, Nov. 8, at home in the R/A Facility with two games at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The doubleheader will be against last year's national runner-up, Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The Mustangs are looking to improve on their fifth place finish in last year's national tournament and will be doing so with a mixture of youth and experience. Captains
Evan Thorn (SMSU's 14th 1,OOO points scorer) and
Nathan Carruth (who should reach 1000 points by season's end) look to lead the charge. They will be followed closely by freshman standout
Kyle Timmerman who was highly recruited from Minneota, Minn. The other two starters will be fifth- year senior
Kevin Kohn who will see his first action in a starting role and
Thomas Abrahamson a fourth-year offensive-minded player, who was last year's sixth man.
“Whitewater is a team that can boast that they have two members of the USA Para-Olympic team on their roster so, they will be tough but we have the ability to match up well,” co-head coach Paul Weiland said. “At the end of this weekend, we will see how we stack up against the rest of the country.”
The Mustangs' next action will be Nov. 14 and 15 as they travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma for five games.
