Mustangs Set 3-Point Record in Rout of Minnesota-Morris

The Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team hit a school record 15 three-point shots as it cruised to a 105-62 victory over Minnesota-Morris in a non-conference game on Friday in Marshall.  The win improves the Mustangs to 7-5 overall, while the Cougars drop to 4-7 this season.  For SMSU, it was the third time this season that it has scored over 100 points in a game and the eighth time in school history.

Freshman Annie Smith scored 10 first half points en route to a career-high 12 points,also grabbing a career-high six rebounds.  Smith was one of five Mustang players in double figures.  Heather Smith scored a team-high 13 points, despite not playing in the first half.  She drained 3-of-5 shots from the outside.  Tori Fink added 12 points, followed by Taylor Voss with 11 and Sara Leidall with 10.  Voss' 11 points tied a career high.  Fink tied Annie Smith with a team-high six rebounds.  Megan Stadler added a season-high eight assists.

SMSU shot 49.4 percent from the floor and 53.6 percent from the outside, both season highs.  It also tied a season-high with 17 steals, forcing 31 UMM turnovers.

The Cougars jumped out an 8-0 lead and held a 16-13 lead with 10:55 left in the first half, before SMSU closed the final 10-plus minutes of the half on a 42-9 run as the Mustangs buried nine first half three-pointers, hitting nine of their final 12 attempts.  Southwest led 55 to 25 at the break.  Annie Smith led all scorers with 10 in the first half.

SMSU maintained control in the second half, stretching its 30-point halftime lead to 43, which was the final margin.

UMM's Tynell Kocer scored a game-high 20 points.

The Mustangs host Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) on Dec. 29 at 5 p.m.
