SMSU Wins Key NSIC Battle Against Mary

BISMARCK, N.D.: 
Southwest Minnesota State's Abby Oakland hit a key three-pointer with 2:50 remaining in the game to give the Mustangs a 59-55 lead and the Mustangs never looked back earning a 68-60 victory over the University of Mary on Friday evening in Bismarck, N.D.

SMSU improves to 9-11 overall and 5-7 in the NSIC while Mary falls to 12-8 and 7-5 in conference play. 

Southwest who led 29-28 at halftime pulled off a great win making plays down the stretch.  With 1:09 remaining in the game U-Mary fouled SMSU's Tori Fink and a technical foul was also issued to the Mauraders bench allowing SMSU to shoot four free-throws. 

Megan Wittkop hit the first two to give SMSU a 63-57 advantage, but it was followed by two missed from Fink.  U-Mary was able to rally back as Sonny Schulz hit a three-pointer with 34.5 seconds left to bring them back within five, 65-60. 

Wittkop hit two more free-throws and Sara Leidall knocked down one more from the charity stripe to cap off the win.

SMSU shot 45.1 percent from the field compared to U-Mary's 31.3 percentage.  Mary however outrebounded SMSU 37-35 gaining 13 offensive boards.

The Mustangs were led by Abby Oakland who had 13 points while Heidi Kimmes and Sara Leidall each had 10 points.  Tori Fink led the Mustangs with six rebounds while also having a team-high five assists and scoring all eight of her points in the second half.

SMSU shot 81 percent from the free-throw line while Mary shot 84.2 percent from the charity stripe.  U-Mary was led by Kristin Bear and Sonny Schulz who each had 15 points.  Bear scored all 15 points of her points in the second half.

Southwest will be back in action tomorrow night at 6 p.m versus Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D.
