Poor Shooting Dooms Mustangs in Loss to Winona State

MARSHALL, MINN.:  Despite shooting 14-51 from the field (27.5 percent) the Winona State Warriors were able to pull off a 50-40 victory over the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs on Saturday evening in Marshall, Minn.

The Mustangs, who were on a four-game conference winning streak, fall to 11-12 overall and 7-8 in the NSIC.  The Warriors improve to 18-7 overall and 8-6 in the conference.

The Mustangs were up by three points, 35-32 with 5:43 left to play but WSU battled back and went up by five points with 2:23 remaining as Jamie Majeowicz converted on a three point play as she made a layup and then finished with a free-throw.  The Warriors then made free-throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.  Winona was 14-of-15 from the charity stripe in the second half and finished the game with a 86.4 free-throw shooting percentage.

SMSU shot a season low 30.4 percent from the field as they were 14-of-46.  The Mustangs were also 0-9 from three-point range.  WSU out-rebounded Southwest 38-37 and also forced SMSU to commit 19 turnovers.

Southwest's Abby Oakland and Liz Grider led the team with 10 points each, while Heidi Kimmes added six points.  Kimmes and Grider led the team with six rebounds apiece. Tori Fink and Grider had a team-high three assists.

Winona's Jenny Steffen led the team with 16 points.

SMSU will be back in action next Saturday, Feb. 16 hosting Wayne State College at 6 p.m.
