Mustangs Earn Sweep on Saturday with Win over PSU

OMAHA, NEB.:
The Southwest Minnesota State softball team won its third game of the day 6-1 over Pittsburg State (Kan.) on Saturday at the Nebraska-Omaha Softball Classic in Omaha, Neb.  The top team in the region, Mustangs are now 13-6 this spring.

Amanda Johnson earned her third victory of the day on the mound, throwing a complete game, while scattering six hits and striking out seven.

Meaghan Laetsch, Katie Turner and Andrea Fennern each had two hits at the plate to lead the offense.  Erin Dickhausen added to her career triples record with her fourth of the spring, after breaking the record in the second game on Saturday against South Dakota.

SMSU scored in the bottom of the first after a leadoff double by Jessica Paczosa.  Laetsch followed with a single up the middle, advancing Paczosa to third.  Then Southwest executed a double steal as Laetsch stole second and Paczosa stole home, making the score 1-0.

The Mustangs stretched their lead to 2-0 in the third after a one-out triple by Dickhausen.  She scored on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Burkhart.

SMSU broke the game open in the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits, and using two PSU errors.  Fennern brought Turner home on an RBI single to center.  Angie Rohne and Fennern each scored later on errors.

Southwest scored its sixth run in the fifth inning a a pinch hit RBI double by Nicole Kelley to bring home Turner, who had walked one batter previously.

Pittsburg State finally got on the board in the top of the seventh, stringing together three hits to make the final score of 6-1.

The Mustangs will conclude their trip to Omaha with two games on Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m. against Missouri Western, followed by Nebraska-Omaha.
