Strong Pitching Leads Mustangs to Win Over Northern

Box Score

BISMARCK, N.D.:
The Southwest Minnesota State softball team defeated Northern State 6-2 on Saturday at the NSIC Crossover in Bismarck.  It was SMSU's second win of the day.

Sara Silke started and pitched 4.2 innings to earn the win, while Amanda Johnson got the final seven outs for her first save of the year.  Silke struck out four.  Johnson fanned two, while allowing just two hits.

Meaghan Laetsch hit a one-out double in the first inning, before Erin Dickhausen reached on an infield hit to put runners on the corners.  After Dickhausen stole second, Amanda Burkhart hit a pop up to shallow right field.  The NSU second baseman caught the ball, but Laetsch tagged up and scored to put SMSU up 1-0.  However, the NSU catcher also allowed the ball to get past, which allowed Dickhausen to score from second on the pop up.

NSU added a run in the bottom of the third on a home run, before Southwest added two more in the top of the fourth.  With two outs, Kiley Petersen ripped a solo home run to left.  Silke followed with single to left, before Andrea Fennern brought her home with an RBI double to right-center.

The Wolves scored again in the fifth, forcing Silke out of the game with two outs.  But Johnson got a ground out to end the rally with the bases loaded.

SMSU added two more in the top of the sixth on RBI singles from Fennern and Jessica Paczosa.

Paczosa, Laetsch, Dickhausen, Petersen and Fennern all had two hits apiece for the Mustangs.
