MARSHALL, Minn. - The No. 13-ranked Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team (23-7, 13-5 NSIC) concludes the 2009 regular season on the road this weekend, traveling to Mary (7-20, 1-15 NSIC) on Friday for a 7 p.m. match and to Northern State (11-16, 6-12 NSIC) on Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest.
Series records: Friday's meeting with Mary marks the ninth contest between the two programs in a series that began in 2006. The Mustangs are 8-0 against the Marauders all-time, including a 3-0 win this season on Sept. 26. Saturday's tilt with Northern State will be the 56th match in a series that dates back to 1978. The Mustangs are 47-8 against the Wolves, including picking up 3-0 wins earlier this season on Aug. 29 and Sept. 25.
How they rank: Neither U-Mary nor NSU are ranked in the latest AVCA national poll. For more about this weekend's opponents, turn to page 4.
Earlier this week: No. 13 SMSU checked in with a .418 hitting percentage and held the conference's individual leader in kills to just seven to pick up a 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-14) victory over Minnesota, Crookston Tuesday night in the Mustangs' final home match of the season.
All-NSIC accolades: The NSIC announced Tuesday its all-conference selections for the 2009 season. Among the honorees were three Mustangs, including
Devin Diedrich (Braham, Minn.),
Mary Groth (West Bend, Wis.) and
Kenzie Niesche (Chaska, Minn.). Diedrich and Groth landed on the All-NSIC squad, while Niesche was on the honorable selection team. The honors did not stop there for Groth; the rookie was also named the
NSIC Freshman of the Year. This marks the second straight year SMSU has had the freshman of the year as Diedrich picked up the honor in 2008.
Super setter: The NSIC announced Monday that SMSU sophomore
Cara Carson (Omaha, Neb.) has been named setter of the week. Carson tallied a match-high 39 assists (13.00/set) for No. 15 SMSU on Saturday as the Mustangs rolled to a 3-0 victory over No. 13 Minnesota State, Mankato. The sophomore directed a potent SMSU offense that went off for a .352 hitting percentage. Not only did Carson quarterback a powerful corps of hitters, she also recorded a career-high six blocks and had six digs in helping the Mustang defensive effort.
Rollin' against ranked opponents: Last weekend--and for the second straight weekend--the Mustangs knocked of a team ranked higher nationally. Two weekends ago, the Mustangs needed just three sets to take down then No. 11-ranked Minnesota Duluth. Last weekend, SMSU had little trouble with then No. 13-ranked Minnesota State, Mankato. Heading into last Friday's tilt with the Bulldogs, the Mustangs had not defeated a nationally ranked team since Sept. 11 when they charted a 3-1 victory in their first go around with UMD. Two weeks later, SMSU is two for two against nationally ranked squads.
