MARSHALL, Minn. - Southwest Minnesota State shot just 27.2 percent from the field and Truman State (Mo.) connected of 7-of-14 three-pointers as the Bulldogs handed the Mustangs a 71-59 loss Friday night in SMSU's season opener at the State Farm Insurance Classic in Marshall, Minn.
TSU moves to 2-0 on the season, while SMSU is now 0-1.
Abby Kenealy poured in a career-high 17 points for the Mustangs;
Miley Hunziker and
Megan Stadler also reached double figures with 10 points each.
Laura Kramer pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for SMSU.
Malor Kiecker's 12 points led the Bulldogs.
A cold shooting performance in the first half by the Mustangs was enough for the Bulldogs to take as much as a five-point lead midway through, but six points from
Miley Hunziker in in the latter part of the half allowed SMSU to chip away at the deficit. Voss' three-pointer with seven seconds left gave the Mustangs a one-point advantage heading into the break.
SMSU shot just 28.2 percent from the field and struggled from behind the arc, hitting just 1-of-11 three pointers for a nine percent clip. TSU, however, shot 40 percent from the field and connected on 3-of-6 three pointers.
After a 32-32 tie three minutes into the second half, the Bulldogs took a decisive lead when Breanna Daniels drilled a three-pointer with 16:16 remaining. From there, TSU would not trail.
The Bulldog advantage grew to as large as 11 four times before a pair of free throws from Laura Joya gave her squad the 12-point lead it settled on.
SMSU had that lead trimmed to four with 12 minutes left in the contest, but an immediate 6-0 run by TSU denied a Mustang charge.
The Mustangs connected on just 2-of-24 three-pointers in the contest.
TSU turned the ball over 21 times.
SMSU will play Hillsdale tomorrow at 6 p.m., while TSU meets up with Minnesota State Moorhead at 1 p.m.
