COLOMBIA, Mo. - The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball team played four games in two days, going 1-3 over the weekend in Colombia, Mo.
Game 1 Recap:
The weekend began with a disappointing loss to a much improved Alabama 69-44 Poor shooting to start the contest put SMSU in a whole that they could not recover from. The Mustangs shot 18.5 percent from the field in the first half and 32.8 percent for the game. Team leaders in the loss included
Nathan Carruth, who had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, and
Evan Thorn, who added 18 points.
Game 2 Recap:
The Mustangs rebounded nicely to defeat host Missouri 51-45. Solid defense and a balanced scoring attack were the keys to victory for the Mustangs. SMSU was led by
Evan Thorn, who had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while
Nathan Carruth and
Tony Hilmoe chipped in with 12 and 13 points, respectively.
Game 3 Recap:
Saturday began with another loss to Arizona 77-43. Poor shooting plauged SMSU as it only mustered 31 percent from the field for the game. Arizona's speed proved to be too much for the Mustangs. Team leaders for SMSU were
Evan Thorn with 19 points and
Nathan Carruth with 13 points.
Game 4 Recap:
SMSU finished the weekend with a lopsided loss to No. 3 Texas Arlington 82-42. In the first half, the Mustangs started out strong shooting, 50 percent from the field . With nine minutes to go in the first half the Mustangs led 20-18. However, trailed 41-31 at the break. SMSU was outscored 41-11 in the second half. The Mustangs were led by
Evan Thorn with 17 points and
Nathan Carruth, who had his second double-double of the weekend with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Coaches Notes:
"To say the weekend was disappointing would be a vast understatement. We know we have the ability to play well even against good teams, but we have to do so for 40 minutes of basketball. We just can't shoot poor like this and expect to win.”
