MARSHALL, Minn.
- The SMSU wheelchair basketball team successfully defended its home court, taking two of three games from Edinboro (Pa.) on Sunday and Monday.

Game 1 Recap:
Sunday began with a hard fought defensive struggle. The Mustangs shot 25 percent from the field, which left SMSU with a 16-12 halftime deficit. Solid defense and 50 percent shooting allowed the Mustangs to overtake their opponents by a final score of 43-31 The Mustangs were led by Evan Thorn, who posted his first of three double-doubles of the series with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Tony Hilmoe was the only other Mustang in double figures as he had 10 points.

Game 2 Recap:

The second game of this parent's day double-header was another hard fought game.  Poor shooting was once again the demise of the Mustangs as they dug themselves into a 26-14 halftime hole. SMSU, despite losing center Kyle Timmerman for 19 minutes of the second half due to injury, had three chances on layups to take the lead with less than three minutes to play. In the end the SMSU was unable to capitalize and lost 40-36.  Team leaders were Thorn with 14 points and 11 rebounds; Nathan Carruth added 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Game 3 Recap:

On Monday morning the Mustangs were able to bounce back and end the triple-header on a winning note. At halftime the Mustangs led by a score of 24-16. Thanks to their defensive pressure and excellent floor game, SMSU never looked back on its way to a 53-38 victory.  Thorn had his most dominating performance of the season with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Meanwhile, Kyle Timmerman bounced back well from injury with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Coach's Notes:

“This was a wonderful parent's weekend and a great way to send off our two seniors Evan Thorn & Kevin Kohn,” said co-head coach Paul Weiland.  “Even in our loss we played great team defense and got contributions from everyone which gave us a chance to win. This puts us right where we want to be heading into Nationals.”

The Mustangs' next action will be at the National Invitational Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in Whitewater, Wis., on March 12, 13  and 14.
