SMSU Earns First Win of the Season at the Univesity of Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball team finished 1-3 this past weekend at the University of Illinois and in the process earned its first win of the season.

On Saturday afternoon, in the final game of the weekend, the Mustangs picked up its first victory of the season with a 55-24 win over the University of Illinois women's team with Jake Wiliams pouring in a career-high 17 points, while Adam Timmerman and Nathan Carruth each added 13 points.  Rick Kamm also added a field goal for the Mustangs, his first career basket.  

SMSU began the weekend with a 66-51 loss to Edinboro (Pa.) on Friday night.  Williams scored a team-high 21 points, while Carruth chipped in with 16.

On Saturday, SMSU faced the top two teams in the nation, falling to No. 1 Wisconsin-Whitewater 74-34 and No. 2 University of Illinois men's team 72-30.  In the loss to UWW, Carruth became the latest SMSU player to reach 1,000 career points, while in the setback to Illinois, Kyle Timmerman and Williams led the scoring for the Mustangs with eight points each.

SMSU, 1-8 overall, will continue play this weekend with games at the University of Missouri.
