SMSU Completes First Ever Undefeated Home Season with Sweep Over Bemidji State

MARSHALL, Minn. –
No. 4 Southwest Minnesota State completed its first ever undefeated home record in school history with a three set win over Bemidji State. The Mustangs won by scores of 25-7, 25-18 and 25-15. Southwest Minnesota State finishes the 2010 regular season 26-3 overall and 18-2 in the NSIC. The Mustangs end the season in second place in the NSIC behind Concordia University who finished the regular season 20-0 in NSIC play. Bemidji State falls to 12-16, 6-14 NSIC on the season.

The Mustangs were led by Brooke Burmeister who led all players with 13 kills in the match. Devin Diedrich finished with eight kills and two solo blocks for SMSU.

With a 9-6 lead in the first set Southwest Minnesota State went on a 12-point run to take a huge 21-6 lead. The Mustangs would not look back from there, winning the first set handily 25-7. Burmeister and Diedrich combined for 10 of SMSU's 15 kills in the first set.

Cara Carson led all players with 40 set assists in the match. Carson added two service aces and 13 digs in the match. Three Mustangs hit double-digits in digs. Freshman Rachel Westby led the back row for SMSU with 17 digs. Kenzie Niesche matched Carson's 13 digs.

The Mustangs led the whole way in the second set behind the surge of five and six-point runs. The match saw just four tie scores and one lead change. The Mustangs jumped out to a 10-point lead 19-9 after two consecutive Bemidji State errors. The Beavers would eventually earn a four-point run in the second set to bring the score to 22-16, but the Mustangs eventually won the second set 25-18.

Southwest Minnesota State celebrated the careers of seniors Ashley King and Tomomi Sakurai on Senior Day at the PE Gym. King picked up two digs in the match and Sakurai picked up four of her own.

With a two-point lead at 10-8, SMSU went on a seven-point run to take a commanding 17-8 lead in the final set. Mary Groth ended the match with her seventh kill of the match giving the Mustangs a 25-15 third set win.
