Mustangs Rally to Defeat Missouri, Advance to Fifth-Place Game in NIWBT

BOX SCORE

MARSHALL, Minn. - Southwest Minnesota State rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to sneak past Missouri 47-46 Friday night in the consolation round of the National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in Marshall.  The Mustangs will play Edinboro tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the fifth-place game.

SMSU (3-13) took its first lead of the second half with 2:30 remaining after Jacob Williams hit a fastbreak layup to snap a 43-43 tie.  A Nathan Carruth bucket with 49 seconds left extended the SMSU lead to four points before Missouri's John Gillet nailed a 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining to make it a one-point game.

UM (23-17) sent Williams to the line with nine second left, but the freshman failed to convert his bonus, giving the Tigers a chance to take the lead on the ensuing possession.  But UM immediately turned the ball over, again sending Carruth to the line with four seconds left.  He would miss his attempt, but the remaining time ticked away and gave SMSU the 47-46 victory.

The Mustangs had three in double figures as Williams, Carruth and Kyle Timmerman finished with 14, 13 and 11 points, respectively.  Timmerman also grabbed 13 rebounds to record the game's only double-double.

Conner Downes' 15 points paced the Tigers.

SMSU outrebounded UM 35-25 in the win.
