MARSHALL, Minn. – Andrew Kinney smacked a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a thrilling 7-5 victory over Winona State in game two of a doubleheader in Marshall.

Winona State snapped Southwest Minnesota State's 11-game winning streak in game one using an eight-run ninth inning to stun SMSU 14-8.

SMSU is now 20-12 overall, 16-6 NSIC, while WSU, ranked No. 20/23 nationally and No. 2 in this week's NCAA region rankings, is 28-8 overall, 18-4 NSIC.

The walk-off homer was SMSU's first since Lex Reinke hit a solo homer to defeat Ashland (Ohio) on March 12, 2008.

It looked like WSU was going to earn the sweep after building a 4-2 lead with two outs in the sixth inning, but an error by the Warrior third baseman kept the inning alive with runners on first and second base.  Josh Wendland then stopped to the plate and drilled a 3-1 pitch over the center field fence to give SMSU a stunning 5-4 lead.  It was the first career home run for Wendland.

Like they did in the opener, WSU wouldn't quit in the final inning, but this time could only tie the game.  The Warriors started the inning with three straight singles off of SMSU reliever Tyler Jendro.  WSU tied the game on a fielder's choice, but Jendro struck out the next Warrior batter for the second out of the inning.  With runners on second and third base, an intentional walked loaded the bases, but Jendro coaxed a fly out to end the inning and keep the game tied.

In the bottom of the seventh, Derick Swenson reached on a fielding error and moved to second base on a failed pickoff attempt by WSU relief pitcher Derek Wojcik.  Kinney then drilled a 2-0 pitch down the right field line for his team-leading 11th homer of the season and give SMSU the victory.

Wendland finished 2 for 3 with three RBI to lead the SMSU offense, while Kinney also a finished with three RBI.

Jendro earned the win and is now 1-0 on the season.  Tyler Paulson started on the mound for the Mustangs and tossed a solid five innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out four and walking one.

SMSU scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first with Kinney scoring on a wild pitch.

The game remained 1-0 until the fourth inning when WSU plated across three runs on three hits.  SMSU pushed across a run in the fifth on a ground out by Kinney to score Bobby Zellman, who led the inning off with a double down the left field line.

WSU made the score 4-2 in the sixth inning scoring a run off of Mustang reliever Aaron Johnson and held the lead until Wendland's heroics.

In Game 1, WSU rallied from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning to stun SMSU and pick up the win.

SMSU trailed 3-0 after one inning of play and 3-2 in the fifth inning, but rallied back to build a 7-4 lead after seven innings.

Jendro paced the Mustang offense with three hits and two RBI, while Adam Thygesen and Cody Curry each added two hits.  Matt Bauer, Jendro and Curry all finished two RBI each.

Winona State jumped to an early lead in the first inning on a leadoff home run by Tony Mueller and a two-run homer by Joe Kley.

SMSU pulled to within 3-2 in the second inning on a solo homer by Curry, his third of the season, and a run-scoring single by Jendro.

WSU added a two-out unearned run in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 4-2, before SMSU answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game.  With one out, Thygesen doubled and following a walk to Kinney, came around to score on a double by Curry.  Bauer then tied the game with a ground out to score Kinney.

SMSU took its first lead of the game in the sixth as Chris Eichten lead off with a walk and moved to third on a double by Jendro.   With one out, Swenson walked to load the bases, before Thygesen gave SMSU its first lead of the game with an RBI ground out.

The Mustangs added to the lead in the seventh on an RBI single by Jendro and a sac fly by Wendland to extend the margin to 7-4.

WSU scored two runs in the eight to trim the lead to 7-6, before SMSU added another run on a two-out RBI single by Bauer to score pinch runner Tyler Flattum.

Adam Schrader was strong after the first inning and pitched into the ninth before being lifted with one out and runners on first and second.  Matt Paulson was called in from the bullpen and hit his only batter he faced.  Chris Kope then entered the game and allowed a three-run double by John Magee on a 0-2 pitch to give WSU the lead at 9-8.  The Warriors then poured it on and finished the inning scoring eight runs on six hits and one Mustang error.

Schrader pitched 8.1 innings and allowed eight runs, six earned on 10 hits.  He struck out seven batters and now has 223 in his career, one shy of the school all-time record of 224 held by Chris Pack.

Paulson suffered the loss and is 0-2 on the season.

SMSU will continue its homestand on Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. doubleheader versus Augustana College.
