Wheelchair basketball goes 0-2 against Utah Wheelin' Jazz on Friday

SALT LAKE CITY –
The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball team suffered two losses on Friday night to the Utah Wheelin' Jazz in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Mustangs dropped the first game 54-58 before losing the second game 54-60.

The Mustangs had three players reach double-digits in scoring in the first game led by Jake Williams who finished with 16 points. Freshman Raymone Brown finished with 12 points and Kyle Timmerman added 11 points.

SMSU trailed by two points, 25-27 at halftime. The Mustangs jumped out to an early nine-point lead at 14-5 on a bucket by Raymone Brown. The Jazz tied the game at 21-21 with 3:12 to play in the first half, eventually taking a two-point lead into the half.

SMSU shot 36 percent from the field in the first half while the Jazz hit 13 of 29 field goals for 45 percent in the first.

Utah was lights out in the second half connecting on 14 of 20 shots, for 70 percent.

Derek Klinkner picked up nine rebounds for the Mustangs while putting up five points. Savoy Brown finished with eight points and eight boards. Klinker and Savoy Brown both picked up seven defensive boards.

In game two, SMSU had four players reach double-digits in scoring, led by Williams, who finished with 13 points. Savoy Brown picked up a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Klinkner scored 12 points on 6 of 13 shooting.

SMSU took a three-point 35-32 lead into halftime but were outscored 28-19 in the second half. Jeff Griffin led the Jazz with 22 points.

Southwest Minnesota State continues play in Salt Lake City today with three games. The Mustangs open played at 10:30 a.m. against Las Vegas and will take on the L.A. Clippers at 4:30 p.m. and will end the day with a rematch against Las Vegas at 6 p.m. All times are Central Standard time.
