MARSHALL, Minn. - Abby Kenealy scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 60-55 victory over Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday night in Marshall.
Kenealy recorded SMSU's first double-double on the season, and the fifth of her career, with 12 rebounds and 20 points.
The victory for SMSU snaps a five-game losing streak and is now 2-6 overall, 1-3 NSIC. It was also the first victory for SMSU over Concordia since the 2004-05 season, breaking a 15-game losing streak.
Bree Holleman was the only other Mustang to reach double-digits in points finishing with 11. Holleman connected on 6 of 8 free throws and added five rebounds. The Golden Bears had three players reach double-digits, led by Rachel Hansen who finished with 13 points.
Hannah Beeler hit a 3-pointer for SMSU just 40 seconds into the game to grab a 3-0 lead. The Mustangs would hold on to that lead until the 13:26 mark of the second half.
Southwest Minnesota State took an 11-point lead at 23-12 on Beeler's third bucket of the game. The Golden Bears would cut into SMSU's lead after a 5-0 run making the score 23-17.
Taylor Voss hit one of her two free throws in the game to push SMSU's lead up to nine.
SMSU shot 46 percent in the first half, including 3 of 6 shooting from 3-point range. The Mustangs were able to hold the Golden Bears to just 29 percent shooting from the field in the first half. Kenealy was big for the Mustangs early in the paint picking up eight points and four boards in the first half.
The Mustangs were able to limit their turnovers in the first half while forcing 10 Golden Bear turnovers. SMSU led the entire way and carried a seven-point 32-24 lead into halftime. Holleman and Beeler each added five points for the Mustangs in the first half.
The Golden Bears slowly began to eat away at SMSU's lead scoring three straight buckets off SMSU turnovers. Concordia-St. Paul tied the game at 35 with two free throws from Erica Gress. The Golden Bears would not lead by more than two points before the Mustangs took over with a 45-44 lead on consecutive free throws by Holleman.
Beeler finished the game with nine points connecting on 3 of 8 from the field, including a 3-pointer.
Taylor Voss finished the game with seven points, connecting on two 3-pointers for the Mustangs.
Kenealy picked up eight points for SMSU in the last nine minutes of the half to help keep the Mustangs in the lead. SMSU finished the game with 22 points in the paint.
The Golden Bears came within two points at 51-49 but consecutive baskets by Beeler and Kenealy pushed SMSU's lead to 55-49. Holleman hit three shots from the free throw line in the last 30 seconds of the game to help SMSU maintain its lead.
Southwest Minnesota State returns home next weekend hosting Winona State on Friday, Dec. 16, at 6 p.m. and the Peacocks of Upper Iowa at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
