Concordia Rallies Past SMSU

MARSHALL, Minn. -
Concordia University, St. Paul, ranked No. 6 in this week's NCAA region rankings, used a 15-0 run late in the second half to rally past Southwest Minnesota State 58-56 on Friday night in Marshall.

SMSU led 49-38 with 9:49 remaining in the game, but CU, which has now won 11 straight games, scored 15 unanswered points to take a 53-49 lead at the 4:28 mark.

The Mustangs rallied to within two points on a pair of occasions and had a chance to tie the game with six seconds left in the game, but Abby Kenealy's jumper rimmed out and the Golden Bears grabbed the rebound to seal the victory.

Kenealy led the Mustangs with 18 points and seven rebounds, whlie Tori Fink added 17 points and five rebounds.

SMSU finished the night shooting 44.4 percent (24 of 54) from the field, but committed 19 turnovers.

Concordia, which has now 15 straight game versus SMSU, improves to 14-8 overall, 13-5 NSIC, while SMSU drops to 7-15 overall, 6-12 NSIC.

The Golden Bears built a 31-28 halftime lead, but SMSU scored the first four points of the second half to take a one-point lead.  The game was tied at 36 with 16:38 remaining, before SMSU answered with a 13-2 run over the next six and a half minutes to build a 49-38 lead at the 10-minute mark.

CU then came right back with its game-turning run to earn the victory.

Jineen Williams led CU with 13 points and nine rebounds.

SMSU will look to snap its four-game losing streak tomorrow night versus St. Cloud State.  Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at the R/A Facility.
