MOORHEAD, Minn. – Brooke Burmeister led all players with 14 kills as No. 6 Southwest Minnesota State swept Minnesota State University Moorhead 25-17, 25-14, 25-17 on Friday night in Moorhead, Minn. Freshman
Alyssa Taylor added a career-high 12 kills for SMSU as the Mustangs improve to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in NSIC play. MSU Moorhead falls to 5-8 on the season, including 3-3 in NSIC play.
Mary Groth added 12 kills for the Mustangs finishing the match with a .524 attack percentage, which led all players in the match.
The two teams traded points to begin the first set, playing to a 13-all tie, before Southwest Minnesota State was able to pull off a six-point run aided by four of Burmeister's match-leading 14 kills. Junior defensive specialist
Kenzie Niesche served SMSU to those six straight points. Niesche also led SMSU's back row in the match with a season-high 20 digs.

Rachel Westby teamed up for the final four points of the first set helping SMSU to a 25-17 win.
The Mustangs started off the second set by gaining the first three points. SMSU would not look back from there, holding a lead throughout the entire set. With a slim 10-8 lead, the Mustangs rallied off five straight points to take a 15-8 lead.
MSU Moorhead would give the Mustangs three points on errors allowing SMSU to take a 23-12 lead. The Mustangs would go on to win the set 25-14, finished off with a kill by Burmeister.
SMSU finished the match with a .317 attack percentage off the set of senior
Cara Carson. Carson finished with 44 set assists, three kills, and eight digs.
The Dragons were able to play to an 8-8 score before the Mustangs pulled away with the set and the match. Carson provided a kill and a service ace to give the Mustangs a 10-7 lead. SMSU would not look back from there taking a 25-17 third set win.
Westby finished the match with 8 kills and 15 digs for SMSU, while senior libero
Brittany Wenzel came up with 13 digs for the Mustangs.
Southwest Minnesota State will continue NSIC action on the road tomorrow night taking on Minnesota, Crookston at 5 p.m.
