MARSHALL, Minn. – The University of Mary (12-3, 9-2 NSIC) extended its winning streak to nine games defeating Southwest Minnesota State (5-9, 4-6) 74-66 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball action on Friday night in Marshall.
The Marauders had three players reach double-digits in scoring led by Kaitlyn Haag who finished with 12 points. Lindsey Sand and Shaunna Knife each added 11 points for the Marauders.
SMSU also had three players reach double-digits in scoring led by freshman
Hope Bonlander who finished with 13 points.
Ellen Degler scored a season-high 12 points while
Abby Kenealy added 12 for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs forced 21 turnovers in the game, but turned the ball over 15 times allowing the Marauders to score 18 points off turnovers. U-Mary was also able to grab 16 second-chance points grabbing 17 offensive boards in the game.
The University of Mary never trailed in the game going into halftime with a 42-34 lead. The Marauders shot 47 percent from the field, including 41 percent (5 of 12) from 3-point range.
Mary built an early 10-point lead in the first half before the Mustangs went on an 8-0 run to come within one at 17-16 with 11 minutes to play. The Marauders built another nine-point lead before Bonlander drilled a 3-pointer to cut the lead to six at 29-23.
Kenealy led the Mustangs with eight points in the first half while Holleman and Degler each added six for SMSU. The Mustangs shot 44 percent (13 of 29) from the field, including 4 of 9 from 3-point range. Each team turned the ball over 10 times in the first half.
The Mustangs looked to get back into the game in the second half starting off strong with buckets from Kenealy and Bonlander to cut U-Mary's lead to five at 43-38. The Marauders fired right back eventually grabbing a 17-point lead halfway through the second half at 62-45 on a 3-pointer by Kayla Schmidt.
The Marauders cooled off from 3-point range in the second half connecting on just 3 of 9 shots from behind the arc after going 5 of 12 in the first half.
Sam Lynn finished the game with nine points and four assists. Degler led the Mustangs on the boards grabbing six rebounds. SMSU shot 38 percent in the game (23 of 60), including 8 of 21 from 3-point range.
Southwest Minnesota State returns home tomorrow night to host Northern State beginning at 6 p.m.
