Beeler's career-highs leads SMSU to big road victory

CROOKSTON, Minn. – Hannah Beeler scored a career-high 17 points and pulled down a career-high nine rebounds to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 69-56 victory over Minnesota, Crookston on Monday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball.

SMSU (4-7 overall, 3-4 NSIC), committed a season-low nine turnovers and limited UMC (6-4 overall, 3-3 NSIC) to just 32.3 percent shooting.

Abby Kenealy added 16 points for SMSU, which earned its first two-game winning streak of the season.  The victory was also SMSU's first in Crookston since Dec. 1, 2007, snapping a two-game losing streak. 

Bree Holleman rounded out SMSU's double figuring scoring with 12 points and dished out a game-high four assists.  Ellen Degler had a solid game off the bench for SMSU with eight points and a career-high seven rebounds, while Courtney McCarthy added a career-high seven rebounds.

SMSU, playing its first game since defeating Upper Iowa on Dec. 17, 2011, put together a key 8-0 run early in the second half to snap a 37-all game and never looked back.

The two teams exchanged the lead 11 times in the opening half with SMSU taking its largest lead at 28-23 with 2:07 left in the first half.  UMC rallied to tie the game with a minute left in the half before Ellen Degler drilled a jumper to give SMSU a 30-28 halftime lead.

Beeler scored 10 points in the first half on 4 of 5 shooting, while Kenealy added eight points.

SMSU finished the opening half shooting 36.1 percent from the field, while UMC shot just 31.3 percent and was 2 of 11 from 3-point range.

The game was tied at 37 with 16 minutes left in the second half until SMSU used the key 8-0 run over the next two minutes to build a 45-37 advantage with 14 minutes left in the game.

SMSU continued to extend the lead and built its largest lead of the game at 57-42 with 8:26 on the clock following a basket by Kenealy.

SMSU shot 40.3 percent (27 of 67) from the field and 4 of 12 from 3-point range.  UMC connected on just 20 of 62 field goal attempts, including 6 of 23 from 3-point range.  The Mustangs also held a 47-41 rebound advantage and outscored UMC 36-22 in the paint. 

Brittani Wiese led the Golden Eagles with 16 points and three assists.

Southwest Minnesota State concludes its two-game road trip tomorrow night taking on MSU Moorhead with tip-off slated for 6 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn.
