WINONA, Minn. – Michelle McDonald scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Winona State to a 64-50 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate women's basketball.
WSU (13-8, 8-7 NSIC) limited SMSU to just 24 percent shooting the in the second half in earning its 11th straight victory over the Mustangs.
Hope Bonlander led SMSU (5-14, 4-11 NSIC) with a career-high 15 points on 5 of 8 shooting with two 3-pointers, while
Abby Kenealy added 11 points and seven rebounds. SMSU has now lost seven straight games since defeating MSU Moorhead on Jan. 3.
WSU built a double-digit lead late in the opening half before settling for a 36-27 halftime lead.
SMSU trailed 38-29 with just over 15 minutes left in the game before WSU used a 6-1 run to extend the lead to 44-30 at the 12-minute mark. SMSU trimmed the deficit to 50-40 with 7:50 remaining following a 3-pointer by Bonlander, but the Warriors answered with five straight points in the next minute to take a 15-point lead and close out the victory.
The Mustangs finished the game shooting 35.6 percent from the field (16 of 45) and were just 5 of 21 from the field in the second half. WSU held a 41-27 rebound advantage, including pulling down 11 offensive rebounds.
Taylor Voss scored eight points for SMSU with a pair of 3-pointers, while
Sam Lynn added seven points and three assists.
SMSU will return home next Friday, Feb. 3, taking on NSIC-leading and nationally-ranked Wayne State at 6 p.m.
