SMSU earns third straight victory with hard-fought win over MSU Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State extended its winning streak to three in a row with a 64-57 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over MSU Moorhead on Tuesday night in Moorhead, Minn.

SMSU (5-7 overall, 4-4 NSIC) also picked up its second straight road victory, the program's first two-game road winning streak since the 2007-08 season.  MSUM (4-7 overall, 1-6 NSIC) dropped its fifth straight game.

SMSU forced MSUM into 22 turnovers and limited the Dragons to 29.6 percent shooting, the lowest by a Mustang opponent this season.

Abby Kenealy led a balanced scoring for SMSU with 10 points, three assists and three rebounds.  Hannah Beeler and Sam Lynn each chipped in with nine points, while Lynn also had four assists and two rebounds.  Taylor Voss, Courtney McCarthy and Jessie Watts all added seven points apiece.

SMSU played a strong first half, limiting MSUM to just 21 points and 21 percent shooting, in building a 35-21 halftime lead.

The Mustangs built a 19-6 lead with ten minutes and 30 seconds left in the opening half following back-to-back 3-pointers by Voss and McCarthy.  SMSU later pushed the lead to 26-10 with an Ellen Degler field goal with 6:30 on the clock and eventually held a 17-point lead before settling for the 14-point halftime lead.

Beeler led all scorers in the first half with nine points, while Voss and Sam Lynn each added six points.  SMSU shot 41 percent in the opening half and connected on six 3-pointers.

SMSU continued to maintain a double-digit lead in the second half, pushing the margin to 50-34 following a field goal by Abby Kenealy with 7:13 left in the game.

The Dragons wouldn't go away and trimmed the lead to 52-44 with 3:25 remaining, but Bree Holleman ended the MSUM run with a 3-pointer with 2:40 on the clock to give SMSU a 55-44 advantage.  MSUM then pulled to within 57-51 with 1:18 remaining, before Lynn hit a pair of free throws to push the lead back to eight points.  MSUM came right back and drilled a 3-pointer to make it 59-54 with 1:13 left, but SMSU made enough free throws and defensive stops in the final minute to hold onto the victory.

SMSU shot just 35 percent from the field and 54 percent from the free throw line, but connected on eight 3-pointers.  MSUM held a 52-36 rebound advantage but was just 2 of 11 from 3-point range.

Taylor Shepard led MSUM with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Southwest Minnesota State returns home to begin a key three-game homestand this Saturday, Jan. 7, taking on Minnesota State, Mankato (9-3 overall, 5-3 NSIC) with tip-off slated for 4 p.m.
