THIS WEEK - Michigan Tech University (0-0) at the PE Gym on the campus of SMSU with tip-off slated for 7 p.m. The game is being played in the PE Gym because of a concert scheduled in the R/A Facility, the home of SMSU basketball since the 1996-97 season. Thursday's game will be the first for SMSU in the PE Gym since the final game of the 1996-97 season.
PE GYM HISTORY - The PE Gym was the home for SMSU men's basketball for 28 seasons, from 1968-96, with SMSU recording a record of 164-177. The final full season played in the PE Gym was in 1995-96, with SMSU finishing 9-6 under head coach Perry Ford. SMSU did play one game in the gymnasium during the 1996-97 season, defeating Bemidji State 85-67. The game was played in the PE Gym because a winter storm forced the postponement of the SMSU versus BSU game and when the game was rescheduled, the R/A Facility was hosting high school basketball playoff games.
MUSTANG GARNER NATIONAL ATTENTION - Southwest Minnesota State has received national attention in a pair of preseason Top 25 polls. SMSU is ranked No. 14 in the preseason Basketball Times poll, while it received votes (28th overall) in the NABC Top 25 poll.
