MARYVILLE, Mo. - Propelled by 11 3-pointers, the Northwest Missouri State women's basketball team pounded Southwest Minnesota State 93-46 on Friday night at the Winstead-Reeves Classic. With the loss, SMSU drops to 0-3 on the season, while NWMS improves to 3-0.
The Bearcats were led by Ashleigh Nelson, as all 18 of her points were off six 3-pointers in the first half. Four other Bearcats netted double-digit scoring figures as Meridee Scott had 14, Maggie Marnin had 12 and Annie Mathews and Tember Schechinger each had 10 points. SMSU was led by
Bree Holleman's 16 points, she was the lone Mustang to reach double-digits. Holleman also led SMSU with five boards.
Poor shooting and turnovers were what spelled disaster for SMSU as the Mustangs shot just 17 of 52 from the floor, including 5-17 from behind the arch and committed 27 turnovers. The Bearcats converted 29 points out of SMSU's 27 turnovers.
The Bearcats were also dominant on the glass as NWMS out-rebounded SMSU 48-23, including 18-7 on offensive rebounds.
NWMS shot exactly 50 percent from the floor (34-68), including 45.8 percent from the 3-point line as the Bearcats closed out the wire-to-wire victory.
SMSU will conclude the Winstead-Reeves Classic tomorrow with a meeting with NAIA Missouri Valley at 4 p.m.
