Hot shooting leads the Huskies to victory over Mustangs on Saturday

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State's Jessica Benson was 4 of 5 from 3-point range finishing with 16 points to lead the Huskies to an 83-55 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball victory over Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday afternoon.

Southwest Minnesota State (5-18, 4-15 NSIC) lost its 11th straight game while St. Cloud State improves to 13-10, 10-9 NSIC, winning its fourth straight game over SMSU.

Benson was 4 of 4 from 3-point range in the first half and was one of four players to score in double-figures for the Huskies. Aaryn Booker (13), Jordi Gerking (11) and Nicole Anderson (10) rounded-out the double-digit scoring for the Huskies.

The Mustangs finished the game shooting 36 percent from the field and were led by Abby Kenealy's 14 points. Kenealy has scored in double-figures 19 times this season and 60 times in her career. Jessie Watts finished 4 of 6 from the field for 11 points and Bree Holleman added 1- points of 4 of 11 shooting, including 2 of 5 from 3-point range.

St. Cloud State was lights out from 3-point range in the first half connecting on 6 of 13 from behind the arc. With a 24-16 lead with 5:53 to play in the first half, the Huskies nailed three consecutive 3-pointers to take a 33-19 lead over the Mustangs.

St. Cloud State closed-out the first half on a 14-5 run taking a 21-point 42-21 lead into halftime. The Huskies shot 53 percent from the field on 14 of 26 shooting while holding the Mustangs to 32 percent (10 of 31) from the floor, including just 1 of 9 from 3-point range.

Benson led all players in the first half with 14 points connecting on 4 of 4 shots from 3-point range. Bree Holleman led the Mustangs in the half with seven points while McCarthy added six.

The Huskies finished the game shooting 90 percent from the free throw line connecting on 19 of 21. SMSU was only able to get to the line once in the first half, but connected on 9 of 10 free throws in the second half.

Southwest Minnesota State will close-out the home portion of its 2011-12 schedule next weekend hosting Bemidji State at 6 p.m. on Friday night before taking on Minnesota Duluth at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
