Minnesota State's outside shooting leads Mavericks to win over SMSU in season finale

MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State's Aubrey Davis hit 6 of 7 3-pointers finishing with 18 points to lead the Mavericks to an 84-65 victory over Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday afternoon in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball action in Mankato, Minn.

SMSU finishes its season 6-20 overall, 5-19 in the NSIC while Minnesota State improves to 17-9, 13-9 NSIC.

Davis knocked down five of her six 3-pointers in the first half to lead all players in scoring, and was one of four Mavericks to score in double-figures. Alli Hoefer finished with 17 points while Laura Weber finished with 14 and Jennie Noreen picked up 14 points for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks shot 53 percent in the game, including 47 percent from 3-point range while the Mustangs finished the game shooting 35 percent (21 of 60).

Abby Kenealy, playing in her final game for SMSU, led the Mustangs in scoring with 15 points. Kenealy finishes her career with 1,151 points, ranking her 11th in school history. Bree Holleman finished with 13 points and seven rebounds while Hannah Beeler and Jessie Watts each added 11 points for the Mustangs.

Seniors Taylor Voss and Courtney McCarthy also played their final games for SMSU.

Southwest Minnesota State opened up the first half on a 14-2 run but Minnesota State was able to chip away at the Mustangs lead to take a 42-37 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Aubrey Davis led the comeback by the Mavericks connecting on 5 of 6 from 3-point range finishing the half with 15 points. Minnesota State was able to tie the game at 30 with 3:44 left to play in the first half on a free throw by Sarah Wiens, and closed-out the half on a 12-7 run to take the lead.

SMSU shot 43 percent on 13 of 30 shooting, including 3 of 7 from 3-point range while MSU finished the half shooting 52 percent on 17 of 33 shooting, including 7 of 12 from 3-point range. Kenealy led the Mustangs in scoring in the first half scoring 12 points while Beeler added 10 points for SMSU in the half. 

The Mustangs came within three points twice in the first six minutes of the second half but the Mavericks were able to pull ahead to an 11-point lead at 61-50 with 8:47 left to play in the game. MSU would not look back from there earning the 84-65 victory over the Mustangs on Saturday afternoon.
