SETTING THE SCENE
SMSU (2-0) returns home to begin NSIC conference play on Friday, Sept. 7 against University of Sioux Falls (0-2) at the Regional Event Center in Marshall. The game is slated for 7 p.m.

OPPONENT AT A GLANCE
University of Sioux Falls (0-2) opened the 2012 season this past week with a 2-0 loss to Augustana and a 3-2 loss to Nebraska-Kearney. So far in 2012, USF has been outscored and outshot by the opponent 5-2 and 22-10. Mikenna Greathouse and Desiree Parmenter lead with one goal each, while Melissa Daugherty leads USFin minutes with 179. In two starts, Goalkeeper Corrin Cook is 0-2, with seven saves, five goals allowed and holds a .583 save percentage. Sioux Falls finished the 2011 season 8-9-1 overall as an independent team.

SERIES HISTORY VS. USF
USF and SMSU square-off for the eighth time in history with USF leading the series 5-2. USF won the last meeting 2-0 in 2011 at the Regional Event Center. In the two wins, SMSU outscored USF 11-0, winning 5-0 in 1999 and 6-0 in 2004.

FRESH FACES
A total of 16 freshmen faces enter the Mustang soccer program along with three transfer student-athletes in 2012. 12 of 16 freshmen have logged playing time already this season.

PRESEASON WATCH LIST
SMSU's Autumn Hayes and Sonya Smith were both named 'Players to Watch' in the NSIC for the 2012 season.

GOLDEN PIPELINE
The 2012 squad features eight players hailing from the state of California. Of the 26 players on the roster, 10 players are from The Golden State.

LAST WEEK'S RECAP
SMSU opened the 2012 season with a 3-0 victory over Nebraska-Kearney. In her first collegiate game, freshman forward Miranda Cadena netted two goals, while freshman forward Kylee Nolan netted the third goal.

The Mustangs defeated St. Cloud State 3-1 in a non-conference game in St. Cloud on Monday. Kayla Williams netted her first two goals of the season in the contest.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sonya Smith was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her 2-0 record in this past week's action. The announcement came from the league office in Burnsville, Minn., on Tuesday afternoon.

Smith, a native of Anoka, Minn., recorded her fifth career shutout against Nebraska-Kearney on Friday, which moved her into second all-time in SMSU history. Smith recorded her second win of the season in a 3-1 non-conference road win over St. Cloud State on Monday. In two starts, Smith has a .929 save percentage and 13 saves, while allowing only one goal.

Smith is currently ranked first all-time in SMSU history with a .876 save percentage and a 1.43 goals against average.  Smith has led SMSU to its first ever 2-0 start in 17 seasons.

HISTORY LESSONS
SMSU's 3-0 season-opening victory against Nebraska-Kearney was the first time ever the Mustangs have won a season opener since 2002 when SMSU defeated Dordt 4-2.

SMSU improved to 2-0 for the first time ever to start a season with its 3-1 non-conference win over St. Cloud State on Monday.

2012 marks the 17th season of Mustang women's soccer at Southwest Minnesota State. SMSU owns an all-time record of 89-187-20, including 54-83-13 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
