The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team will take a short trip to Sioux Falls for a mid-week slate on Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. The Mustangs will look to avenge their 77-66 loss to the Cougars in the first meeting at the R/A Facility earlier this season.
FIRST GAME RECAP
Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls meet for the 21st time in a series that started during the 1969-70 season. SMSU leads the series 15-5, and SMSU holds a 9-1 advantage in games played in Sioux Falls. SMSU won the last game played in Sioux Falls, 86-76 in a game played during the 2002-03 season. SMSU has dropped two straight games to USF including the first meeting this season 77-66 in Marshall on Dec. 1.
Alison Nagel led the Mustangs with 17 points on 7 of 19 shooting including 1 of 4 from 3-point range, while
Rebekah Rolling added 15 points on 6 of 9 shooting. SMSU outscored USF in the second half 39-38 but the 12 point first half deficit was to large to succumb. SMSU shot 37.5 percent (24-64) but just 25.8 percent in the first half (8 of 31). With 6:06 remaining in the game, SMSU found themselves down 65-51, but SMSU wouldn't go down quietly. Mikayla Saathoff finished an old-fashhion three point play with 1:30 remaining. USF would bend but not break as the Cougars held on and took their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory in school history. Jaicee Ulmer had a game-high 18 points for USF. The Cougars shot 38.5 percent in the game, but conneced on six 3-pointers and 21 of 26 free throws. A complete listing of each game in the series and a box score from this season's game is on pages 6-7.
