MARSHALL, Minn. - Whitney Kieffer's and Carly Pagel's double-doubles led Upper Iowa to a 71-58 win over Southwest Minnesota State on Friday night at the R/A Facility.
Upper Iowa (7-13, 4-9 NSIC) has now won three straight contests over SMSU (2-16, 1-12 NSIC) dating back to Jan. 27, 2012, its longest in series history.
Kieffer ended with 28 points and 17 rebounds - eight offensive, while Pagel finished with 14 points and 16 rebounds - she also had eight offensive rebounds.
UIU outrebounded SMSU 49-29 including 20-12 on the offensive boards.
SMSU finished the game shooting 38 percent (19-50), while the Peacocks finished shooting 41.3 percent (26-63).
SMSU was outscored in the paint 40-28 and 14-9 on second chance opportunities.
Alison Nagel and
Bree Holleman led the Mustangs as Nagel had 16 points and Holleman has 12.
Mikayla Saathoff's 12 points rounded out double-digit scoring for the Mustangs.
SMSU shot a season-high 30 free throws in the loss, converting 18.
The Mustangs limited their turnovers in the second half to just four but Kieffer and Pagel were too strong on the boards for Upper Iowa.
SMSU will welcome Winona State into the R/A Facility tomorrow night at 5 p.m. for its annual "Hawaiian Night" game. Fans are encouraged to wear "tropical" themed gear to the game in order to forget the cold, winter season.
