WINONA, Minn. - Winona State shot 48 percent from behind the arc and limited Southwest Minnesota State to just 33 percent shooting in earning a 72-53 victory in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball on Friday night.
WSU (10-3, 4-2 NSIC) connected on 6 of 10 3-pointers in the second half and were led by Becca Friestleben, who poured in a game-high 22 points on 8 of 18 shooting, including 6 of 10 from 3-point range.
SMSU (1-10, 0-6 NSIC), which dropped its seventh straight game, was led by
Alison Nagel who scored a team-high 18 points with seven rebounds.
Hannah Beeler scored nine points with three 3-pointers for the Mustangs, while
Rebekah Rolling,
Hope Bonlander and
Ellen Degler each added five points.
The game was tight in the opening half with seven ties and five lead changes. Nagel drilled a jumper with five minutes left in the half to tie the game at 19-19, but WSU closed the half on an 11-4 run to build a 30-23 halftime advantage.
The Warriors continued its run to begin the second half and built a 48-28 lead with 13:49 remaining following a three-point play by Tessa Wells.
SMSU closed the gap to 61-49 with 6:41 left in the game after a three-point play by Bonlander, but WSU allowed just four points the remainder of the game to close out its 12th straight victory over SMSU.
SMSU finished the game shooting 39 percent (19 of 49) from the field and was just 9 of 17 from the free throw line. The Mustangs committed just 14 turnovers, their second lowest total of the season.
WSU closed the game shooting 46 percent from the field and held a 34-31 rebound advantage.
Southwest Minnesota State continues its two-game road trip tomorrow night taking on Upper Iowa University (3-10, 0-6 NSIC) in Fayette starting at 6 p.m. UIU lost 60-58 on Friday night to Sioux Falls.
